Gemstone Highlight – Abalone Shell
The abalone shell almost looks like its name. If you think about the shiny inside of shells that you find on the beach, you might be close to imagining what an abalone shell gem looks like. Jewelry has been made with shells for centuries, and the abalone shell is no stranger to jewelry. It has also been used for centuries for carvings. And, Apache girls wear this shell on their foreheads on their initiation day into womanhood.
You may or may not be surprised to find out that the abalone shell actually does grow and form in the ocean. It is made of calcium carbonate.
It is said that the abalone makes the structure of the body stronger, as well as the heart chakra. The abalone shell is very similar to the pearl in divinatory meaning. It represents the different tides of emotion, due to the connectivity that it has to the sea.
It also encourages sensitivity and easy flow with other people and helps to connect to family, and more especially, motherhood. It is said to bring harmony to relationships. With all of this said, it would be particularly smart to keep a few abalone shells not only in your jewelry collection, but also around the house.
