The purple color can range from an alluring light purple to a deep, dark and sensuous purple hue. Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz rocks. The name of the stone and the meaning is quite funny, as when you break down the name, a-, which means “not” and methustos, which means intoxicated, to create “not intoxicated”. Ancient Greeks believed that the stone would prevent the wearer of intoxication, and would decorate their drinking containers with amethysts or wear the gem to ensure that they did not become intoxicated.
The violet hue of the amethyst is created by the iron or transition element impurities, as well as the presence of trace elements. The end result of these things is a complex, crystal-like, lattice replacement.
Because the amethyst is quartz, its hardiness is durable and is a great choice for custom made jewelry.
